Introducing the first artwork in the Mandela Day 2025 series. This painting tells the story of two lion cubs who were never meant to survive. Rescued by the NSPCA’s Wildlife Protection Unit from a notorious lion breeding farm in Lichtenburg, Karlos and Ivana were found emaciated, crippled, and barely able to stand. Malnourished and suffering from neurological issues, they had known only suffering at the hands of an industry built on exploitation.
But this is not where their story ends. Thanks to swift intervention and expert care at Panthera Big Cat Sanctuary, these inseparable siblings have spent the last six years recovering, growing stronger, and finally living a life free from harm.
Their story — now captured in watercolour — is one of resilience, compassion, and the power of giving animals a second chance. It’s also a reminder of why the NSPCA continues its fight against the captive lion breeding industry.
