The Sani Donkeys In 2017, the NSPCA uncovered a horrific case linked to the illegal donkey skin trade, a brutal industry that targets donkeys for their hides — all for the production of traditional medicine. Dozens of donkeys were rescued from unimaginable conditions. Many bore physical and emotional scars. But the NSPCA refused to give up on them. Thanks to the relentless efforts of dedicated inspectors, five donkeys were safely rehoused to a peaceful property in Bethlehem, Free State — where they now live out their days grazing in safety,
free from fear. Fourteen more soon followed. This uplifting watercolour by Art by Mareli captures not just their rescue, but their dignity, peace, and the joy of freedom hard-won.
